Background
In 2014, I undertook a period of secondment from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to rail operator TransPennine Express and towards the end of the secondment, the railway line between Manchester and Preston was to be closed for major engineering work at Chorley, north of Bolton for preparatory work for the forthcoming electrification of the route and other follow up works associated with the closure of that route that occurred a few years earlier.
Bespoke a requirement
For this I led on the artwork produced for the Chorley blockade, creating front covers for timetables, bespoke advanced leaflets for affected customers on the route which included creating station dressings in the form of cuboid banner wraps and traditional posters and banners to deliver the messages in the correct place to the customer without breaching listed building regulations at certain locations.
It is estimated that in the region over 20 pieces of individual artwork were created including:
- Two-sided A5 flyers for a series of early Meet the Manager sessions focusing on Bolton, Buckshaw Parkway, Chorley, Horwich Parkway, Lostock, Adlington and Leyland
- 4 page DL flyers focusing on Preston, Chorley, Bolton and Manchester, supplemented later with an overarching version nearer to the works
- It was proposed that a series of joint Foamex board for use at local stations were to be produced however these did not get produced in the end following a communication breakdown
- A special cuboid banner wrap for Preston Station owing to listed building regulations, but also making use of available space opportunities.
- Banner for use on the railings at Preston Station, again owing to listed building regulations and making use of available space opportunities.
Following this work, future closures of the route have been undertaken to alter stations, tunnels and install the wiring under the banner of the ‘Great Rail North Project’.
